Minimizing Fire Risks at Your Business

Welding A common reason to file a business insurance claim is fire. In some businesses, these risks are substantially higher than in others. Yet, in every situation, business owners need to take steps to minimize risks associated with fire on their grounds. There are many ways to do so. These tips can help you to keep your building safe as well as protect employees and customers.

Prevention Is Best

It is always best to prevent fires from occurring rather than trying to clean them up later. To prevent them, take a close look around your business property for areas of risk. Here are some key things to look for both inside and outside of your location.

  • Are there areas of heat and fuel near each other? This includes areas for cooking, storing fuel and electricity points near heat sources. These areas need to be clean, managed well, and always in good working order.
  • Look for areas of debris buildup. Both inside the location, such as around work areas, and outdoors along walking paths, can be at risk here. A buildup of debris can create a hazardous situation. Even accumulating dust might pose a fire risk.
  • Is the electrical system exposed or otherwise at risk? It is best to have an electrical inspection once every three to five years, depending on the age of the structure. This pinpoints areas of concern regarding your structure.

If you have not done so, consider having an inspection done. You can hire a licensed contractor to do this. In some cities, fire professionals and building inspectors can offer guidelines. This may be ideal in situations when you are planning to purchase a building or business.

Resolving Fires Fast

You have business insurance to help reduce the costs associated with fire claims. Yet, you can minimize those claims on your own by having tools in place to help your team react.

Start by purchasing the proper fire equipment for your organization based on the risk factors there. The OSHA website provides specific guidelines based on the type of business you own. It also provides insight on how to place, store and space extinguishers.

Finally, take the time to train employees. Train them how to use fire extinguishers. However, be sure they have proper training on how to use fuel sources and equipment. This can work to minimize the risk of a fire in the first place.
